Upon November 22nd winemakers from all across Arizona collected for the first time to display their wines at the Arizona Wine Growers Festival. Verde Valley winemakers stole the show winning 9 from the 14 gold medals that were awarded at the event, including two Best of Show category as well as three in the Individuals Choice category.
Eric Glomski, owner and winemaker from Page Springs Cellars took home seven from the gold medals including 2 Best of Show Awards and two People's Choice Awards. But it wasn't the amount of awards Glomski obtained that gave him or her the "warm fuzzies" he says, "The inescapable fact that all these vineyards were in the same place at the same time really helped produce solidarity for our industry. I truly felt this cohesiveness, and may see that we had finally arrived."
The festival was the largest meeting of Az winemakers ever - 20 wineries took part in the event and Eight hundred people joined in the festivities tasting as well as voting for their favorite wines!
Glomski was not the only one from the Verde Valley winemakers to take home an award. Barbara and Bob Predmore, owners of Alcantara Vineyards won 2 gold medals for their 2006 Petit Sirah and three bronze medals! "We are very excited about everything that left this event, it shows the quality of the wine that is coming out of Northern Arizona," says Barbara Predmore.
Javelina Leap Vineyards and Caduceus Cellars additionally did well within the competition. Javelina Leap wine maker and owner Fishing rod Snapp, took home a gold for his 2008 Sirah and a gold for his 2008 Cabernet Franc and Caduceus Cellars had been awarded a gold medal for their 07 Premier Paso. Snapp said "It had been wonderful to see the actual support of Arizonans, almost 1,000 people enjoyed the day and that we had people Six deep at the table sampling our wines. Winning Gold & Silver in the wines category of Arizona wines made from Arizona grapes reinforces the fact that the wines have reached nationwide status and that seems real good!Inch
The success that the Verde Valley wineries had at this festival is another testament that the Verde Area wine region originates of age. The region not just has the ideal soil, climate, and climate to nurture great grapes but also talented winemakers who know how to turn great grapes into spectacular wine.
